of antique (or sun-shy) sea Copper, aluminium, UV light 2023
With growing regularity, the boundary between saltwater and solid ground, and the lives and materials that inhabit these transitional zones, are mapped and calculated through remote sensing technologies. of antique (or sun-shy) sea explores the techno-logics and data visualisations through which nations and extractive industries transform complex environments into territories and readable maps of prospective resources. The artwork re-mediates LiDAR (laser-scanned) remote sensing imagery of the undersides of coastlines onto surfaces of copper and aluminium, materials that are linked to extractive processes on land and underwater. Through this layering of media, of antique (or sun-shy) sea considers how accumulating masses of data points become the geometries and dimensions of cognitive, practical, and emotional relationships with the planet.
